Looking to Upgrade your Flooring in the Commercial or Public Sector?

What is the real cost of not upgrading your premises’ flooring?

Richard Sutton, General Manager at Horbury Property Services, gives his top five tips to commercial and public building owners and managers, looking to upgrade their flooring.

“Our flooring division installs over a quarter of a million square meters of flooring in a typical year. We can also carry out all screeding damp proofing and preparation. But when it comes to upgrading your building’s flooring, what are the most important things to consider?

  1. 1.    How will the new floor enhance your brand?

You’ll obviously want your new flooring to be aesthetically pleasing, but it is important to consider how the overall look and feel will enhance your brand. Frayed, worn or damaged carpet can reflect badly on a business or organisation, as the flooring is important in creating the right impression with visitors, staff and service users.  If your building’s flooring is in need of an upgrade, there are a wide variety of options available to you, including carpets, resin and epoxy coverings, to name but a few.

We can also include bespoke logos and unusual colourways in our flooring solutions and advise you on what materials give the best performance and how you can best reflect your organisation’s brand.

  1. 2.    What’s hot and what’s not?

Flooring trends are forever changing, but it’s important to choose flooring that has the right performance characteristics. That vibrant new trend may look fantastic today, but how about in a few years’ time, when styles have changed? Because Horbury Property Services is a full facilities management provider to the construction industry, we’ll work with you to make sure you’re making the right decisions for your building in the short, medium and long-term.

  1. 3.    How will your new flooring choice keep customers, visitors and staff safe?

Marble and tile areas in entrance halls and reception areas look great, make a statement and are very hard wearing. But if you are managing a floor upgrade project in a public or commercial building, you need to consider health and safety. Certain floorcoverings have a greater tendency to become slippery when moisture enters a building on people’s feet.  It is important to reduce risks of slips, trips and floors in all types of buildings to avoid claims for accidents.

If your carpet has been in place for several years, it may be harbouring allergens and particulates which could be harmful to health. It is therefore advisable to review carpet and consider replacing it at least every three to five years, depending on its location and durability.

We’ll advise you on appropriate material usage, managing risk and your health and safety obligations.

  1. 4.    Your flooring is damaged, what do you do?

Even the most high-quality flooring will eventually wear out; this is not only unsightly, but can become a health and safety hazard causing slips, trips and falls. Certain types of flooring are easier to repair than others; carpet and vinyl tiles can be replaced individually and hardwood flooring can be sanded down if damaged. Our refurbishment and maintenance service includes upgrading of existing building finishes, including flooring. We also offer full replacement of fixtures and fittings and will advise you on floor suitability and longevity as part of our overall project management service

  1. 5.    Choose a specialist partner

It is really important to work with a flooring refurbishment partner that offers a comprehensive service and has expertise in this important area of a building.

With Horbury Property Services as your floor refurbishment partner, there won’t be any surprises; we’ll help you choose the right floor for your building and brand and you’ll be fully aware of any upkeep commitments from the outset.
