For many landlords and building owners, local authorities and businesses, reassurance about who is carrying out fire safety installations or upgrades is essential, which is why they are increasingly using approved and accredited contractors. Schemes like FIRAS have been around for decades, but are more relevant today than ever as they provide the peace of mind that organisations are looking for.
So what is FIRAS?
FIRAS was first introduced back in 1994 to drive up standards in the installation of fire protection products, for the benefit of the construction industry. It is a voluntary, third party independent certification scheme for installation contractors of both passive and active fire protection systems and is operated by Warrington Certification and accredited by UKAS.
The first port of call when appointing any fire safety contractor is to verify that they are certified on the FIRAS database. Any company that is listed here, like Horbury, is required to employ competent Supervisors and Technicians whose technical and practical competence is assessed by FIRAS inspectors. These companies are required to keep a register of competent employees, which is regularly reviewed to ensure that the company maintains a skilled and capable workforce.
An important element of being FIRAS registered is that the installer companies like Horbury are subject to ongoing random inspection of their installation work. We are also required to have an annual audit of our office systems by FIRAS inspectors to ensure compliance. This provides added reassurance to customers of the workmanship they will receive. As FIRAS certificated contractors, we are required to log all contracts to the FIRAS database, which means our clients can receive a certificate of conformity (compliance) for the completed works.
The real benefit of using a FIRAS-certified company is that you know the work has been carried out to the required standard.
So, it is little surprise that businesses and public sector organisations are choosing FIRAS certified companies like Horbury, which provides them with peace of mind. We are successful in securing a number of contracts because we are FIRAS registered and have the expertise and competency to deliver fire safety projects effectively.
